My First Video Cover Letter! (aka Getting out of your comfort zone.)
One of my goals this year was to take bigger risks creatively. A mini goal within that – create Video Cover Letters, or VCLs at Dallas Travers calls them. A quick authentic video to introduce yourself to a casting director or producer. It sounded like a cool, new take on a traditional cover letter and also a little scary…so I knew I had to do it! We are already approaching the end of the first quarter of 2014…… and no VCLs so far…
However I was on Twitter a couple of days ago, and I came across a series of auditions for The Reel Deal – a new multi platform, celebrity lead, short film competition – a kind of American Idol for short film. My first thought – I would never do a reality show. But ironically the first round of auditions was a 90sec VCL – who are you? where are you from? why should you be picked? It seemed like a sign – what better practice? And really, being flown out to LA for a week to make a movie – sounds awesome! My brain then came up with a hundred reasons NOT to do it – I have no time to do this, the deadline is in 4 days, I don’t own a video camera, how can I do something super creative if I don’t know how to edit etc. But I did it anyway. I went simple, used the camera on my computer and did 5 takes. I chose the 5th take. Let me know what you think? I’d love to hear your thoughts.
Are you going to try a VCL?

I think you did great! And exactly what the assignment was! That’s the trick with these VCLs. Follow the rules AND show your personality. Great job!
Ah Thanks so much Adryenn! Especially coming from you, that means a lot!
