Watching A Personal Legend Unfold

July 16, 2013

On my personal blog noredlipstick.com, I often relate Paulo Coelho’s idea of a personal legend because it’s something that’s very important to me.

And talk about personal legend with this one.

I just saw Trip To Bountiful starring Cicely Tyson, a 79 year old actress who before Trip To Bountiful, hadn’t set foot onstage in thirty years.

First of all, I have to acknowledge her work with the show because it was the best and simplest acting I’ve seen in ages.  Not to mention, she was feisty, quirky, full of fire, and just all around – spot on.

Second of all, and so exciting to me that I got the chills when my friend Brittany first told me this – this role was unlike any other in her career because it was truly Cicely fulfilling her destiny.  Check out her Tony acceptance speech below.

It’s crazy because even the character was so in line with this same quest for that final bit of destiny.  Like Cicely, her character had just one more thing (a trip to her hometown of Bountiful) to do before she could close the book on her life.  This sort of stuff is so cool to me. I absolutely love that I got to witness live, Cicely carrying out what she so strongly felt she was destined to do.  Can you imagine wondering why you are still on this earth?  Then thinking you must carry out one more great role?  And then by the grace of God, it happens?  So cool.  Personal legend at its best!

Oh PS – if you’re a student, you can get tickets to the show for only $32.  Just go to the Stephen Sondheim box office during hours (no rush needed) with your ID.  Gotta love it.

And (this is pretty cool) – I just checked the Trip To Bountiful site and it looks like they have Wine Wednesdays and Green Thursdays:

WINE WEDNESDAY! Receive a free glass of wine at every Wednesday performance! Valid for paid ticket buyers over 21 on Wednesday performances only.

GREEN THURSDAY! Receive a free, reusable tote bag at every Thursday performance! Valid for all paid ticket buyers on Thursday performances only. While supplies last. – See more at: http://thetriptobountifulbroadway.com/tickets/#sthash.R9wzb5N7.dpuf

Check it out.

Onwards and Upwards,
